Grades of Membership

Details on membership grades and the pre-requisite qualifications and experience needed for these grades are provided in The AusIMM By-laws (5-15). However, in summary, membership grades are as follows:

    • Fellow
    • Members
    • Associates
    • Graduates
    • Students
    • Company

Members and Fellows are known as ‘Corporate Members’.

Fellow

This is the most senior level of professional (Corporate) membership.  Applicants normally must have a relevant degree, but there are some exemptions from formal qualifications which are outlined in The By-laws. Applicants must have had at least 10 years relevant industry experience since graduation and must have occupied a position of major responsibility for at least five (5) of those years. In the case of a proposal for admission or transfer as Fellow, three sponsors are required all of whom must be current AusIMM Fellows.

Member

This is the main professional (Corporate) grade of The AusIMM. It is available to graduates following three years of relevant experience after graduation. In the case of a three year degree or equivalent, the required length of experience is four years. Every proposal for admission as a Member shall be sponsored by not less than three Corporate Members.

Associate

This grade enables suitably experienced people from the industry to join in the activities of The Institute. Those wishing to become an Associate of The AusIMM (and not possessing the qualifications for Corporate membership) will be found in many important operational and support positions within the industry. Applicants shall have been engaged in the minerals industry for not less than two years. Every proposal for admission as a Associate shall be sponsored by three Corporate Members.

Graduate

This grade is a stepping stone to professional membership. The minimum requirement is an acceptable 3 year university degree or equivalent. Every proposal for admission as a Graduate shall be sponsored by not less than two Corporate Members or one Academic and one Corporate Member.

Students

All university students are encouraged to enter The AusIMM through this grade. The process for registration as a Student member is less onerous than that of other grades and Students will often find a Student Chapter of The AusIMM or faculty members ready to guide them in the completion of the Application Form. Every proposal for admission as a Student shall be signed by the appropriate Principal or Academic under whom the Student is studying, or two Corporate Members. Applications to this grade will not be approved if applicants fulfill the requirements of a higher grade of membership.

Company Members

Company membership provides an opportunity for companies to support their professional and other employees.
