Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

What is the Importance of CPD?

For AusIMM members to be part of the global minerals industry, our professionals must engage in various types of continuing professional development (CPD). As the minerals industry experiences rapid advances in technology, CPD assists members in keeping ahead of the group rather than relying on skills that were gained or taught several years before. The AusIMM has developed a guiding document, which can be found here.

The purpose of participating in CPD activities is to:

    • maintain or increase levels of technical and professional competence;
    • extend the range of professional skills;
    • develop new areas of expertise;
    • promote confidence and pride in their work;
    • establish links with fellow professionals; and
    • increase and broaden career options.

AusIMM Chartered Professionals and BPEQ Assessees engage in CPD activities as a requirement of their Accreditation. Further information can be found under Chartered Professionals and under BPEQ Registration.

What are the CPD requirements for a Chartered Professional (CP)?

To assist you in understanding what constitutes continuing professional development and what is required to comply with these standards, The AusIMM has developed the Continuing Professional Development Guidelines. This document provides guidance on how to maintain, develop, update and refine your skills in today's rapidly changing technological world. Professional development is gained both through practicing in a field and learning through experience and via structured courses and self-study.

These Guidelines applies to all professional members of the AusIMM, Chartered Professionals and Registered Professional Engineer Queensland status holders however the latter two should also review The AusIMM Chartered Professional Program guidelines for additional information and requirements. More information on CPD requirements can be found in the CP Logbook and this extract from the By-laws of the Board of AusIMM Chartered Professionals.
